About Entel
On a tanker or a chemical carrier the air around a cargo tank can be flammable. A handheld used there must not produce a spark under any circumstance, not if it is dropped and not if the battery fails. Equipment certified for that is called intrinsically safe, and it is the ground Entel has made its own.
The HT series is the best known example. They are not elegant devices: heavy housings, large controls that can be worked with gloves on, and batteries that last a full watch. They are carried on tankers, offshore and around ports, and fire services and industry use them too.
Entel also supplies portable VHF sets for GMDSS, the kind that belongs in the lifeboat. That is equipment inspected on board and whose certification has to be in order, so not something you replace on a hunch.
